Connect to ProtoPie Player

ProtoPie Player allows users to test prototypes created with ProtoPie Studio on smartphones. ProtoPie Player is a native app, which allows prototypes to present a variety of interactions on the smartphone.There are four ways to import prototypes created with ProtoPie Studio into ProtoPie Player.

Scan QR code

  1. Prepare a computer running ProtoPie Studio and a smartphone running ProtoPie Player.

  2. Ensure that both devices are connected to the same wireless network.

  3. Click Connect Device on the Tool bar in ProtoPie Studio. A QR Code like the one shown below.

  4. Tap SCAN in ProtoPie Player on your smartphone and scan the QR code

  5. Click Play in ProtoPie Studio, or tap Run on the smartphone running ProtoPie Player. The prototype will be transmitted to ProtoPie Player.

  6. If there are edits in the prototype made in ProtoPie Studio, click Run once more to transmitthe updated prototye

** Changes in the wireless network or IP address will require another QR code scan.

Type IP address

  1. Prepare a computer running ProtoPie Studio and a smartphone running ProtoPie Player.

  2. Ensure that both devices are connected to the same wireless network.

  3. Click Connect Device on the Tool bar in ProtoPie Studio. An IP address like the one shown below.

  4. Tap TYPE on ProtoPie Player, and type in the IP address.

  5. Approve the device in the device list window in ProtoPie Studio, establishing a connection between ProtoPie Player and ProtoPie Studio.

  6. Click Play in ProtoPie Studio, or tap Run on the smartphone running ProtoPie Player. The prototype will be transmitted to ProtoPie Player.

  7. If there are edits in the prototype made in ProtoPie Studio, click Run once more to transmit the updated prototype.

** The most recently used IP address is shown in the text box for IP addresses, the Connect screen on ProtoPie Player or the Type screen. Tapping on the displayed address will establish a connection with ProtoPie Studio.

** IP addresses can change even within the same wireless network. Make sure to confirm the address before inputting it.

Connect through USB cable

  1. Prepare a computer running ProtoPie Studio and a smartphone running ProtoPie Player.

  2. Connect the smartphone to the computer with a USB cable. **In order to use Android devices USB Debugging mode must be enabled **iTunes is required in order to use an iPhone with a Windows PC

  3. Tap PLUG in ProtoPie Player.

  4. A connection will be established without the need for additional approval in the device list window.

  5. Click Play in ProtoPie Studio, or tap Runon the smartphone running ProtoPie Player. The prototype will be transmitted to ProtoPie Player.

  6. If there are edits in the prototype made in ProtoPie Studio, click Run once more to transmit the updated prototype.

Android USB Debugging

Refer to the following images for more detailed instructions in enabling USB debugging.

  1. Navigate to the Settings page and enter the 'About Phone page.

Features of ProtoPie Player

Double-tapping the smartphone screen with two fingers will show the following options.

Stop

Stops the currently running prototype and returns to the main screen

Restart

Restarts the currently running prototype

Save in ProtoPie Player

Locally saves on the device the prototype brought over from ProtoPie Studio

Control playing speed

Adjusts the playing speed of the currently running prototype

** The speed set in ProtoPie Player does not affect the actual PIE file. Changing the speed merely speeds up or slows down the prototype currently running on the device.

Select the start scene

If a prototype has multiple scenes, you can select which scene you would like to start with when running the prototype in ProtoPie Player.
