Controlling the Volume of Audio and Video Files in ProtoPie 7.7

You can adjust the volume of audio or video files in two ways:

A "volume" property has been added to the property panel of video and audio layers. This allows you to set a default volume for an audio or video file.

You can also set it to play automatically, with or without a looping effect.

As it exists as a property, “volume” can be used within the 

, allowing you to trigger actions based on the volume property of an audio or video file.

ProtoPie 7.7 comes with a new response type: Volume.

Use the Volume response to adjust the volume of your video and audio layers based on one or multiple triggers.

ProtoPie 7.7's volume control features unlock many creative possibilities in your prototypes. No matter what you create in ProtoPie, the new volume property and response will bring even more freedom and expressiveness to your projects! Get creative and use them to simulate a range of experiences, from common music player apps to

Background Blur was only available on iOS devices before ProtoPie 7.7. With this latest update, you can now add Background Blur layers to your prototypes in the Studio app, and test the effect in the Player app on both Android and iOS devices.

Storing QR code values in predefined variables opens up many interaction design possibilities! For example, you can store a QR value and display the information it contains in another scene. Or you can animate layers based on the QR code’s position and size, as in this prototype example here below.

User testing can provide valuable feedback that can be used to refine a product before implementation, ultimately saving time and resources in the product development cycle.

The new User Testing features empower designers & product managers to do moderated user testing (remotely and in-person) with prototypes made with ProtoPie, all within ProtoPie’s own secure ecosystem.

To start, create a test room and invite your participants. Then observe how test participants—your end users—interact with your high-fidelity prototypes in real-time, and collect valuable, meaningful feedback to lead future product development decisions.

These features are currently in closed beta, available to select ProtoPie Enterprise customers. 

You can invite users to test your prototype on their phone, tablet, or desktop. There are two ways for participants to join the test room:

By opening a link in their desktop browser.

Whether using a link or scanning a QR code, participants need to input an interim code to access the test room. This ensures that only the intended participants can access the testing environment and, consequently, the prototype.

During user testing, moderators must ensure that the feedback they receive from participants is accurate and reflects their actual experiences with the product. This can be difficult, as participants may not always be forthcoming with their opinions or may be influenced by the testing environment itself.

Within ProtoPie's secure environment, moderators can conduct live user testing sessions to observe how participants interact with the product in real time. This allows them to not only identify pain points or areas for improvement, but also receive and give feedback immediately.

This feature allows you to test our latest beta features before their official release date.

With this ProtoPie update, users can try out the following beta features:

Turn your instance into a container by detaching

Users have long requested the ability to 

. We are pleased that ProtoPie 7.5 now makes this possible.

Detaching breaks the connection with the component and turns the instance into a container. You can do this either from the property panel or the context menu. Ensure that you have enabled the feature in Labs prior to use.

Once the instance has been detached, the Detached_ prefix will be automatically added to the detached interaction’s name. Easily identify whether an interaction stems from a detached instance or not.

Bring structure to your canvas with rulers & guides

It can be difficult to align objects, shapes or text layers on the canvas. This is where 

 come in handy. These visual tools are now here to help you quickly and precisely align objects, measure distances, and prototype faster.

Rulers appear at the top and left sides of your canvas area in ProtoPie Studio. First, make sure to enable rulers & guides in Labs. To show/hide rulers, use Shift + R, or access this under View in the application menu.

To create a vertical or horizontal guide, hover the mouse over the ruler area, then simply drag and drop the resize cursor.

Removing guides is simple. You can do this in three ways.

Quickly identify the variable scope in the formula input field

Enabling the improved formula input field allows you to distinguish whether a variable used inside a formula can be used in the current scene only or can be used in all scenes.

Being able to see right away what scope a variable has is convenient, especially if you are one of our advanced users that likes to use tons of 

 in their high-fidelity prototypes. Also, it’s useful when you dissect a Pie created by someone else.

Ensuring the security of our Enterprise customer’s data is one of our top priorities.

We know organizations can’t afford risking that the prototypes they share through 

 might get into the wrong hands and cause data leaks.

For this reason, we have introduced expiring links on ProtoPie Cloud. Enterprise teams can now configure how many days a prototype’s link should remain accessible after it is generated. 

This feature is only available in the Enterprise plan.

To set a link expiration on ProtoPie Cloud, follow these steps:

Click on the section below the space owner’s name.

The default expiration timespan is Never.

The timespan is exact as it also considers the time the expiration was set. 

The default access level is No access. Other options are:

What’s New in ProtoPie? Prototypes' Expiring Links 

 on May 30, 2022 marked a major turning point in 

. Everyone could finally get started with ProtoPie and explore its power without any time restrictions, thanks to the new Free plan.

To support this feature milestone, we had to make adjustments to the way users create and save Pie files in 

. Users on a paid plan could choose between saving locally or saving to the cloud. Free 

 users would only be able to save their work on the cloud.

But as many of you in the community pointed out, this necessary separation between Local and Cloud files created one frustrating problem — It was no longer possible to overwrite a prototype on the cloud after opening a locally saved version. When uploaded to the cloud, Local Pies would automatically create a new URL, whether previous versions existed on 

We took your feedback seriously and started working on a better solution. ProtoPie 7.2 brings greater clarity and usability improvements to the whole flow.

Quickly identify where a prototype is saved.

Easily switch between Local and Cloud Pies.

Overwrite your cloud prototypes at any time to avoid unwanted pie URL duplicates.

Overwrite a Cloud Pie from any file in ProtoPie Studio

In versions 7.0 and 7.1, a locally saved Pie file would always generate a new URL when uploaded to the cloud. The only way to overwrite existing cloud versions was to open prototypes directly from ProtoPie Cloud in ProtoPie Studio’s dashboard.

But what if you were saving both locally and on the cloud?

For example, we know some of you prefer to save Pies locally and only upload to the cloud when you need to share the prototype with stakeholders.

In that case, the previous upload flow would result in annoying pie URL duplicates on ProtoPie Cloud. If you’d already shared the prototype’s URL with someone, you’d have to send them the newly generated URL, creating a lot of confusion and unnecessary friction.

ProtoPie 7.2 marks the end of this problem by allowing you to overwrite a prototype on the cloud from both locally saved Pies and other Cloud Pies.

If you open and edit a Local Pie and then upload it to the cloud, you can now decide whether you want to create a new Pie URL or overwrite an existing Cloud Pie. All you need to do is:

Select the prototype you want to overwrite in the Save to ProtoPie Cloud menu.

To overwrite a Pie URL from another Cloud Pie in ProtoPie Studio:

Select the prototype you want to overwrite.

You can now find all the Cloud Pies and Local Pies you recently edited in one single space. Open any recent prototype from the 

 list in ProtoPie Studio’s dashboard and just start editing it.

You can also remove items or delete the prototype from your computer or from ProtoPie Cloud, depending on where it’s saved.

No more wondering if the prototype you opened is a Cloud Pie or a Local Pie. In ProtoPie 7.2, you can always check where a prototype is stored.

Starting from the dashboard, each prototype card clearly indicates where the file was saved. The information is also available inside each tab after opening a prototype in ProtoPie Studio.

Before 7.2, it wasn’t possible to correctly import bitmap masks into ProtoPie Studio. This type of masking would break after you imported it from a design tool.

Starting from today, you can seamlessly import bitmap masks and edit them in ProtoPie Studio. If you often add this type of masking when you design icons, using them in ProtoPie just became a whole lot easier.

What’s New in ProtoPie? Overwriting Cloud Pies from Local Pies and Bitmap Mask Support

It's been a while since we rolled out major improvements to ProtoPie Cloud’s interface. After introducing game-changing features such as 

, our Pie Pages started looking a bit too cluttered and difficult to navigate.

Many in the community pointed out that user experience on ProtoPie Cloud’s Pie Pages needed a reboot. The interface looked quite messy, and it wasn’t optimized to allow for fast and hassle-free prototype sharing. For instance, the QR code to open prototypes on the Player app was hard to find and the overall visual hierarchy wasn’t logical and straightforward enough.

It was time to reconsider some of our choices and redesign Pie Pages to make it easier for users to customize and share prototypes through the cloud. We also made some adjustments to the interface in preparation for our upcoming plan changes.

With this new update, we bring you a more intuitive and streamlined navigation experience on 

One of the first things you’ll notice is that the interface of Pie Pages on ProtoPie Cloud looks cleaner and better structured.

Features are no longer scattered all over the interface, and now you can access all the functions you need directly from the toolbar at the top of each Pie Page.

 Options, have been grouped together in a more consistent and logical way.

The result is a far less-cluttered interface that still offers easy access to every feature on ProtoPie Cloud. 

Create and edit Interaction Recordings faster

We’re also excited to unveil an improved user experience for 

 (previously known as Interactions Recipes). You can now access this feature directly from the toolbar, as well as quickly edit and delete any existing recordings.

This small improvement paves the way for our upcoming 

, and Interaction Recordings becoming accessible to all users regardless of their plan. 

Customize the background color of your Pie Pages

Another much-awaited enhancement is the added ability to customize the background color of Pie Pages. Just open "View Options" on the toolbar and enter the desired hex color code or select a color using the eyedropper tool.

You can now set the background of your Pie Pages to match the color of your brand or website! 

This Pie Pages redesign is the first in a series of exciting product updates we’ll be rolling out this year. We now have a cleaner Pie Page interface that will make it possible to scale and further improve the overall user experience on ProtoPie Cloud. What's New in ProtoPie? A Revamped, Cleaner Design for Pie Pages on ProtoPie Cloud

Similar to how Google is your best friend for any online search, 

 is meant to be your go-to prototyping tool to craft realistic interactions for your 

. However, this speciality ended up being a bit of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, ProtoPie enables you to create cutting-edge high-fidelity prototypes with realistic on-page microinteractions. On the other hand, it wasn’t always very intuitive to make custom transitions between scenes without the use of additional responses.

, creating simple scene transitions in ProtoPie ended up taking more time than it should.

ProtoPie 6.1 marks the end of all this hassle. With Smart Jump, making custom transitions between scenes is a hassle-free process. That’s not all—also import interactions between frames from 

Smart Jump is a new transition type part of the Jump response. It allows you to quickly create scene transitions by automatically animating matching objects. 

You can use Smart Jump to easily create interactions such as:

Just like Smart Animate in Figma, Smart Jump identifies the differences between matching layers across scenes and automatically animates them.

These differences can include changes in the following properties:

ProtoPie will know which layers match with each other based on their names and layer hierarchy among two scenes.

For example, you have an icon in scene A and the same icon in scene B but in a different position. When you jump from scene A to scene B using a Jump response with a Smart transition, this icon would animate automatically upon jumping. 

Before ProtoPie 6.1, you would need additional responses in either scene or both in order to achieve the same result. Now, all you need is a single Jump response that does all the hard work for you. It’s possible to adjust the duration, easing, and delay to make any customization that you envision.

Import your Figma interactions as Jump responses

Using Figma as a starting point for your click-through prototypes? Pick up where you left off in ProtoPie, and turn your click-through prototypes into high-fidelity prototypes.

ProtoPie automatically converts the interactions between frames in Figma into Jump responses upon 

. If your frames include any Smart Animate transitions, ProtoPie would import these as Jump responses with Smart transitions seamlessly.

This means you no longer need to recreate transitions between scenes in ProtoPie before adding more complex interactions. We’ll take care of it for you, so you can focus on what ProtoPie does best—high-fidelity prototyping.

We’re thrilled to announce that the ProtoPie Smartwatch Solution is officially available from today. This means your team can finally build realistic smartwatch prototypes, creating fully immersive connected experiences involving wearables.

Smartwatches and other wearables might not yet be as popular as smartphones, but the market is growing. The global smartwatch market was 

 a volume of 68.59 million units in 2020, and it’s expected to reach 230.30 million units by 2026. Smartwatches are especially popular in the health and fitness industries due to their lightweight and detailed monitoring capabilities.

And industry big-hitters are taking note. With Samsung and Google 

 to essentially merge Tizen with Wear OS, and with the 

 of Google’s in-house smartwatch likely coming at some stage in 2022, we expect the smartwatch market to grow significantly in the near future. This means more digital products for smartwatches, and Wear OS in particular.

Before we introduced the ProtoPie Smartwatch Solution, there simply was no high-fidelity prototyping tool that allowed designers to create realistic end-to-end prototypes for smartwatch apps. Designers would have to rely on engineers to manually code prototypes before deploying them on actual smartwatches. Or, they would resort to simply using their imagination without having anything tangible to test.

Jeff Hoefs, UX Lead for Wear OS at Google, was an early adopter of the ProtoPie Smartwatch Solution. He states: “We have been using ProtoPie for a few years as a rapid prototyping tool.
